Walking in Malham

Our Walking Group on 6th July was a much anticipated visit to Malham in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Some of us had never been before. Others had not been for a good number of years. The walk included Janet’s Foss, a picturesque waterfall, in which people were already cooling off.

Boundary walk

As is now traditional for May, the Walking Group met on the first Saturday to ‘beat the bounds’, i.e. walking the full boundary of both Parishes and reflecting at various points on the route. We were also pleased to be joined by Heidi, Lisa and Natasha, who were in training for a 26-miler later in the year.

Sculpture trail and reservoirs

During December 2018 and January 2019 our Walmersley Road Walking Group were involved in two walks. In December we took the Metrolink to Manchester Victoria station and begun our walk back along sections of the Irwell Sculpture Trail. In January we explored the three reservoirs of Bolton: Jumbles, Wayoh and Turton & Entwistle.

During our Bury to Heaton Park walk we took in the River Roch, Unsworth Pole and Egypt Farm before getting to Heaton Park.

Whilst there we visited the monument to John Paul II who with the help of his ‘popemobile’ had taken mass there in 1982.

Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal

We set off from St. John’s Church Hall at 9am and headed off through Clarence Park towards Freetown. Our walk took us past St. Thomas’ Church and Pimhole before we picked up the Roch Valley Greenway and along the banks of the River Roch for a short while before reaching Blackford Bridge.

Our walk was led by Geoff Hamilton and was an educational adventure of industrial mill ruins of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We were aided by the Bury & District Local History Society book titled ‘The Forgotten Valley’.
