Back on the beach, there’s unfinished business to attend to – the restoration of Peter. ‘Do you love me?’ Jesus asks Peter. He asks again and again until Peter is fed up.

Are you a tree by a stream of living water? We may grow at different rates and in myriad of ways. We each bear distinctive leaves, flowers and fruit.

Despite ourselves, we may just hear ourselves say: ‘Send me’. And then we may just hear a voice in reply saying: ‘What took you so long? I’ve been waiting for you. Now go.’

Our readings are about being called and known. Our Gospel has Jesus telling Nathaniel to ‘come and see’. Our Psalm tells us that we are known from the womb. In the OT, Samuel is repeatedly called.

At some stage, God’s plans will intersect with our own sense of being and purpose. We need to listen and hear and respond. To say: “send me”.

Who are you? What kind of Christian are you? Indeed, what kind of person are you? And how often do you think about it?

In the year that King Uzziah died. Or in the year that George VI died. Or JFK. Or Diana. Or in the year that someone you loved died. 

Jonah’s physical presence in Ninevah brings disruption and unhinges everything. The city stops. Everyone repents, animals too!

We’re each asked to follow our own particular call, to make the most of what we’re given and not waste it. To show the love & mercy of God to anyone we come across – even when we don’t feel particularly able. Because if we don’t then who will? And we too can be messed up and conflicted, just like Jonah.
