Shema Yisrael! Hear, O Israel! The word shema means more than listen. It means obey. Do something. If you don’t do, then you’ve not heard.

But back from Renton to Moses and the original ‘Choose Life’ monologue from which this was all shamelessly, if maybe unwittingly, pinched.

Our reading from Deuteronomy is known as the Shema. It gets to the very heart of worship. It tells us who God is and what our response should be.

In the Wilderness, God showed up – and if he didn’t, the people perished. But people soon forget. They did then – and we do now.

We’re being asked to choose: What kind of people do you want to be?
“Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength”. Moses says: is this how you want to be known?
