That’s true of this Collect. It’s both pleasurably right and compellingly wise. Despite the virtual reality that our senses and our reason present to us, we live in a world in which God is more near, more present, more active than we ever dared to hope or to dream.

I almost said that it broke in despite Jonah, not because of him. But, on reflection, it still needed Jonah to turn up, despite his misgivings.

Not seven times or seventy seven or even seventy times seven but countless times during our lifetimes. We are continually being set free.

The forgiven, restored and repaired. Perhaps, just as in The Repair Shop, we might find that each one of us gets transformed in the process.

It says that Stephen fell asleep. For the theologian, Soren Kierkegaard, he falls asleep because he died praying forgiveness for his enemies.

Today we get that awkward bit in Jonah. A prophet wasn’t supposed to be upset when a warning is heeded. King’s aren’t supposed to take notice.

For us there’s always forgiveness, no matter what we’ve done, how far we’ve strayed or how many times we have erred. God forgives every time.

If two of us agree on something it has heavenly consequences. It’s meant to put us on notice. A community marked by love and restoration.
