Shortly after the destruction, the cathedral stonemason noticed that two of the charred medieval roof timbers had fallen in the shape of a cross. He set them up in the ruins, on an altar of rubble, with the moving words ‘Father Forgive’ inscribed on the Sanctuary wall…

The grace of God shows its full colours in the glory that is at work in all of God’s people who are called to be saints. That grace which is at work in you, the saints of God who are in Bury.

‘Writing the Divine’ was a workshop held at St Chad’s, Rochdale on Saturday 19th October 2019. It was led by author, poet and priest, Canon Rachel Mann.

The intention is to make this an ongoing Christian writing group with people from any and all denominations that have an interest in creating new Christian writing.

The scriptures this month include dreams, blessings, woes, hair being preserved, scattered sheep… and the forgiveness of Christ from the cross.

What is important to you? What is worth fighting for? What would make you be determined and persistent, not give up on, not be put off until you got it sorted? Is there something that you are so passionate about that you would stick with it and be prepared to struggle for as long as it takes?

Into the story comes a tiny, unnamed, Israelite slave girl. She would have been on the bottom rung of society, if she was on the ladder at all. A slave, female, foreign and young. In modern parlance we’d say she’d been trafficked.

The church is ‘dressed’ and ready for our Harvest festival today. We’ll also have St John with St Mark’s School with us on Tuesday morning for their Harvest service. Donations of food will again go to the Porch Boxes and the Booth Centre. There will be a Harvest lunch in the hall after the Sunday service.

Last Sunday we used the ‘Jigsaw’ poem by Rabbi Lawrence Kushner as part of a celebration service at Christ Church Walmersley.

Often we have little idea of either the impact that we have on others or of our interconnectedness.

Sometimes though you can meet someone for the very first time and know straight away that there’s a reason why you met. You’ve changed them and they’ve changed you.

Our next Sunday@Seven service is October 27th in the hall at Christ Church.

The theme this time is ‘Show yourselves to be my disciples’, which is taken from John 15.

Sunday@Seven is held on the last Sunday of every month. If you enjoy hymns old & (very) new then we’d love to see you!

Eagles Wing are a mutual support group for asylum seekers and local people in Bury, Lancashire. Their aim is to befriend newcomers to our town. Old friends can make sure that no one is lonely and isolated when they arrive here. They have members from all over the world, speaking many different languages.

The message from Nigel and I is: go, share your experience, tell about what you’ve seen, testify to what you know to be true. Because whether you know it or not, or like it or not, you’re all preachers! You each have a story to tell, a testimony to give…
