Here are the August 2023 Bible readings which we’ll be using in church. Please make use of these readings and reflect on what they might be saying to you.
The readings
We’re still in that long period of what the church calls Ordinary Time. There are no seasons like Advent or Lent. We’re not obliged to stick with the Lectionary during this time but mostly we do. August sees us starting off with the Transfiguration of our Lord, then continues the journey through Romans and Matthew, whilst giving options for the Old Testament readings.
- August 6 – Transfiguration: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 Peter 1:16-19; Luke 9:28-36;
- August 13 – Trinity 10: 1 Kings 19:9-18 or Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28; Romans 10:5-15; Matthew 14:22-33;
- August 20 – Trinity 11: Isaiah 56: 1, 6-8 or Genesis 45:1-15; Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32; Matthew 15: [10-20], 21-28;
- August 27 – Trinity 12: Isaiah 51:1-6 or Exodus 1:8-2:10; Romans 12:1-8; Matthew 16:13-20;
If you don’t have access to a Bible, then please follow this link to the Vanderbilt Divinity Library. It’s not always the same but it’s normally pretty close!
They are not listed above but each week there is a set Psalm too. And in our August 2023 Bible readings we have Psalm 67, a psalm of blessing for all people…
Make his face to shine upon us
May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, Selah
that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Selah
Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.
The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us.
May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere him.
